Pre-production is the process in which a film is organised and planned before shooting. The three subcategories of pre-production are: finance, logistics and creative. Finance is the money-based side of pre-production which involves things such as a budget and sourcing funding. Logistics is the more logical part of pre-production which involve having thing in order such as call sheets, release forms and location recces. Pre-production is important as it allows for a film to be produced at a professional standard. If you were to go out and film without it you would end up with something of mediocre quality at best, not to mention the fact that pre-production allows you to get everything in order and can make the shooting process much easier. Effective project management would consist of the following: clear and coherent logical decisions, effective management of staff/actors/resources and a level of industry standard professionalism throughout. My aim, in terms of project management, was to achieve a level of professional standard throughout my pre-production work and to achieve a high-quality final product when shooting. These are my aims as I would like to produce a film and I would like it to look good and resemble the same characteristics as a high-end short film.

Logistics

When making a short film there are various logistical considerations that would need to take place. Location recce, cast release forms and risk assessment are a few examples. A location Recce is when you ‘scout’ out an area for filming and gather information on it, as well as perform a risk assessment, this is necisarry as you’ll need to get a gist of the location before filming, ensure it is safe for filming and make sure you have permissions for filming.

Finance

A budget is the backbone of most, if not all, films. Without a budget it would be impossible to film as money would not be allocated properly or perhaps there would not be any money at all. A film without a budget is likely to fail or be of poor quality as money is needed for equipment, crew, actors, sets, catering etc so without a well thought out bedget a film will likely fail.

Creative

The creative aspect involves scripts, costumes, storyboards etc- this is crucial as without a storyboard there would be no structure to your product, thus creating an incoherent mess that would mess serve its purpose.

In conclusion there are many factors that contribute to pre-production, all of them are just as vital as each other and play a major role in shaping the final product.
